In The Crucible, John Proctor faces a choice between the truth or a lie. He is faced with life or death. He is faced with losing his pure name or standing strong and dying with his beliefs. Like Ash Beckham, John had to make a choice that would affect them deeply. While Beckham had to face a social issue, about being mis-gendered and feeling shame for not correcting the person who did it, Proctor faced death by spitting on his pure name. In The Crucible, living in that society, ones name is everything. By signing the page that said he had consulted with the Devil, Proctor admitted to giving up his soul and his name. That was something he could not live with. He needed his name, because he had already lost everything else. When Danforth would not even allow him that, he knew that he would not be able to live with himself. He decided to keep his good name, tell the truth, and hang. John Proctor was a man of flaws, but a man who believed in himself and God. His principles were too strong to allow the liars around him to tarnish his name, when in fact, he had not done anything or anyone wrong.
As a high school student at the age of 17, I have not been faced with a situation that goes against my morals and beliefs. I have faced challenges, but none so serious as throwing my morals out and living, or sticking to them and dying. I do not and cannot pretend to know what I would do if faced with such a situation, but I would hope that I would stand firm, for I am strong of faith. I have thought of what I would do in such a situation, but knowing what you want is different than what actually happens. I just hope I can stay strong, and make the right decision.
