In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, there are two main characters with a dream of a better life. They plan on having their own ranch, with animals, plants, alfalfa, and a rabbit hutch. One character, Lennie, cares so much about this dream, it is all he thinks about. All he wants to do in life is tend the rabbits. The other character, George, has the dream of a life were he is not a servant to another person. He just wants to be a free man that does not owe anything to anyone. But, they are not thinking practically about achieving their dream. They can never seem to raise enough money, because Lennie always seems to get them into trouble. One of the tips Bel Pesce talked about in her Ted Talk was not to blame other people for your failings. George resents Lennie as the reason he does not have a wife and land of his own. George will never be able to cope with his falling short if Lennie is there to be blamed. Although, Lennie is not blameless, he is not the only reason If they want to follow their dreams, they need to start by being patient, accepting their failings, trust themselves, knowing what is good and what is not realistic, and to focus on the journey they are taking, not always just on the end goal. When they do this, they may be better suited to following and achieving their dreams. In my life, their have been few things that I have wanted so much, I am willing to do anything for. My dreams are rather small compared to most that people have. Like Lennie and George, I have long term dreams, but at this stage in my life, my short term dreams seem to be the most important steps into realizing and living up to everything I want to be. |
