12 Angry Men
People are strong in their beliefs and think they have unshakable faith in something, however, doubt can destroy all of that. Doubt is what changed the minds of 11 Jurors in 12 Angry Men, and what has fueled Casey Gerald in his faith. Doubt can twist you around, no longer knowing what actually is true. Doubt can also push you forward. Doubt is not just a force of destruction, but also a force of knowledge and research. When someone has any reasonable doubt, they go and search what they believe is the truth. This search leads them to the truth and the rightful knowledge about the subject, not just their blind faith. This was shown in 12 Angry Men. When a vote was called for, Juror number 8 had reasonable doubt and voted not guilty, as was his right. All the others were upset with him, because they did not care that they were voting on a human life, but rather only cared that they wanted to go home. Everyone was against him, until he started to explain and give them the knowledge needed in order to see the truth. Slowly, but surely, No. 8 showed others that there was room for reasonable doubt in the case. At the end everyone was convinced except No. 3. He was stubborn and refused to accept the truths that the others were displaying because he was stuck in his little hole of blind faith and prejudice. But even he had to see the validity of the facts that No.8 was showing him and the others. And eventually even he, the man of unshakable faith, saw doubt.
Being only a teenage, I cannot begin to scratch the surface of doubt that others face every day. My doubt is generally personal, when other people have to consider the stake of another's life, or spiritual faith as Casey Gerald had to. All I can wish, is for myself to never have to face that harsh kind of doubt, but in this world and growing society, it seems inevitable. |
